Happy New Moon, loves! The second lunar event of the New Year (and the first new moon) brings us opportunities for expansion, elevation, and growth. New moons are always great for fresh starts and resolutions, so if you didn’t set intentions on January 1st (or you’ve felt your resolve slipping), this is the perfect opportunity to focus your energy on the shifts you want to make for the coming month.

Rising in Aquarius, this moon places the focus on innovation, originality, and vision. Aquarius is the most off-beat of the air signs: ruled by Uranus, this sign is all about dynamic, groundbreaking change. And though we’re heading into the last week of January, that’s often the vibe at the beginning of the year. What frameworks can we put in place that allow us to grow without restriction?

If you’re anything like me, however, you may be hitting a mid-January slump when it comes to making progress on those goals. I’ll just say it: why does everything cost money? No matter what you set out to achieve this year, I’m guessing it requires investment of some kind—financial, as well as energetic. If your bank account has you blue, and it feels like your finances are limiting your potential for growth, then read on - this easy new moon money spell is for you!

Cinnamon: delicious AND profitable!

Cinnamon: delicious AND profitable!

Spellwork doesn’t have to be difficult and costly. In fact, when it comes to money spells, it strikes me as a little counterintuitive to spend excessive amounts of cash on special ingredients. While it’s true that you sometimes have to spend money to make money, this simple abundance ritual can be performed using only things you probably already have in your cupboard.

Some of the most powerful magickal herbs are staples in most kitchen pantries: salt, cayenne, basil, and cloves all have their place in witchcraft as well as in your evening meal. The spell we’re doing tonight makes use of bay leaves and cinnamon, which if you don’t have them on hand should be easy enough to procure with a quick trip to the grocery store.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Cinnamon (cinnamon sticks are recommended, but powered is fine too)

  • Bay Leaves (dried preferable)

  • A candle (7-Day/Jar candle or whatever you have on hand. Green is preferable, but white is just fine)

  • A dollar or small-denomination bill

  • Three pennies or small-currency coins

  • Ribbon or string (green or gold preferable)

  • Something to write with - a sharpie, paint/paintbrush, etc

  • Paper

WHAT TO DO

This simple candle magick ritual focuses on creating an object of focus that you can charge and re-charge every time you light it. I like doing repeatable spellwork during the new moon, as it can be built upon over the duration of the next lunar cycle, til the spell reaches its full strength (and hopefully produces a result!) come the next full moon. Pam Grossman talks about this form of ‘buildable’ spellwork in the most recent episode of her podcast The WitchWave, which is well worth a listen if you’ve not yet checked it out.

STEP ONE: Set a clear intent. This might sound obvious, but so often spellwork fails because we aren’t clear enough about what results we expect to see. “I want money!” may feel clear to you, but from the universe’s perspective it’s nebulous at best. How much money? Where do you want or expect this money to come from? Do you want it all at once, or would you prefer to have an income stream that delivers cash regularly?

Bear in mind, too, that the most successful spells work to strengthen your own agency and energetic output. I’m not saying don’t focus your intent on winning the lottery, but you might have more luck with a money spell for bringing in new clients, or making more sales. Do you have a financial goal you’re trying to meet in the next month? Set that intent. The more specific the better.

Once you have your intent figured out, write it down on a piece of paper. Phrase it as a present-tense statement: not “I will” or “I want,” but “I am” or “I have.” Tuck the paper away for now.

STEP TWO: Prepare the candle. How you go about this will depend on what kind of candle you’re using. If you have a jar or 7-Day Candle, take your permanent marker or paints and draw or write your intent on the candle. You can distill your intent down to a few key words, or you can craft a sigil or symbol that is representative of those goals to you. If you’re not using a jar candle, you can either tuck your paper underneath the candle, or carve keywords or sigils into the body of the candle with a sharp object.

STEP THREE: Dress the candle! Here’s where your herbs come in. Make three small holes in the top of the candle, arranged around the wick in a triangle shape. The holes should be big enough for just a little oil and herb mix - no bigger than the eraser-end of a pencil. Try to go about 1/4 inch deep with each hole. Tap the excess wax out and discard.

STEP FOUR: Add your herbs to the small holes in the candle. Whole bay leaves will need to be crushed before being added. This part can be fiddly, so take your time. If you have tweezers or a tiny scoop of some kind, that can help. You can also add your herbs to an oil blend (baby oil/olive oil + essential oil + herbs) and use a dropper to fill the candle holes, but this isn’t necessary - only if you have something on hand. (Citrus scented oils are great for wealth and prosperity - orange and lemongrass, as well as bergamot, vetiver, and patchouli).

STEP FIVE: Finally, take your cinnamon stick (if you have one) and wrap the dollar bill around it. Tie them together with the ribbon or string, and tie them around the candle. If you’re not using a cinnamon stick, just roll up the note tight and tie it with the ribbon. Place your candle somewhere safe and secure, with your paper intention underneath it, and the dollar bill/cinnamon stick affixed to it or placed next to it. Then take your coins and place them in a triangle around the base of the candle. Light that baby up and spend some time letting your intention flow from you as you watch the flame burn.

If you’re like me, you probably don’t want to keep the candle burning in perpetuity. Cats and smoke alarms make me wary of leaving things lit in my house. So, if you’re planning on putting it out and relighting it, make sure you never blow it out. Doing so dispels the energy you’re trying to build. Instead, use a candle snuff or non-flammable object to put out the flame (or you can clap over the top of it - a fun, kinetic way to extinguish the flame!)

Try to make a habit of re-lighting the candle every night til the Full Moon. When the Full Moon rises, take some time to reflect on the intention you set and see how much further toward that goal you are. The results may surprise you!

Best wishes for the new moon, and good luck building prosperity!
